Mott MacDonald has a thorough understanding of TfL standards and is
experienced in the design of numerous stations on the London
Underground Network. We have also planned and designed interchanges
at stations in south London for the Jubilee Line extension
including the new London Bridge underground station.
Other recent and ongoing major projects include:
- Crossrail, CLRL – assessment of the effects of the construction
of Crossrail on interchange at all affected stations in central
London and the north and south eastern parts of the route during
the six year construction period.
- Paddington - study to develop operational improvements to
train/taxi interchange at Paddington Station
- Thameslink North of Thames, Railtrack – Mott MacDonald examined
the opportunity for improved interchange at Luton, St. Albans and
West Hampstead, including pedestrian modelling and use of
visualisation tools.
- West Croydon Gateway, LB Croydon – urban regeneration and
infrastructure planning work on new West Croydon Station Corridor
nodal interchange. The scheme integrates rail, bus, tram and taxi
services as well as accommodating the addition of Thameslink 2000
and the proposed East London Line services, and increases station
capacity and improves passengers’ travelling experience.
Regeneration of surrounding area included creating pedestrian and
cyclist networks and access. Project involved development and
application of simulation models examining movement of pedestrians,
buses, trams, HGVs and cars using VISSIM and Mott MacDonald’s STEPS
pedestrian simulation program.
- Partnership with Medway County Council - development and
modelling of a dynamic bus station utility as part of a
regeneration project in Chatham town centre where we provided land
use planning, traffic engineering detailed design, and transport
planning services.
Regionally, we have designed local interchanges on the Greater
Manchester Metrolink light rail system and a proposed transport hub
at Manchester Airport.
- Manchester Airport Transport Hub - Manchester Airport has set
an ambitious target to increase the proportion of journeys to and
from the airport by pubic transport to 25% by 2005. We are
Manchester Airport’s lead consultant on the interchange and have
developed an innovative interchange building centred on the
existing station that brings together purpose-built facilities for
bus, coach, train, cycle, taxi and the Metrolink.
- Project Orpheus Business Case Development, Tyne and Wear PTE -
developing a business case for a suite of infrastructure
initiatives to reinvigorate the Tyne and Wear Metro to provide a
21st century public transport service. Initiatives focus on
upgrading existing Metro stations with particular emphasis on
improving real and perceived feelings of safety and security,
quality and interchange experience. At the detailed level this
might entail: reconfiguration of concourse areas, increased
implementation of responsive CCTV, increased staff presence
(customer care and security staff), lighting upgrades, increased
maintenance and cleaning, additional park and ride and meet and
greet facilities, bus/metro interchange facilities, station
precinct accessibility measures and offering more passenger/
customer service facilities in and around stations to make stations
destinations in their own right.
Internationally, we have played a key role in planning some of the
world’s largest interchanges such as Hong Kong Airport at Chep Lap
Kok.
