Mott MacDonald has considerable experience of using a wide range of
market intelligence sources in order to provide input to or to test
various forecasting models, as well as carrying out research and
monitoring studies in the transport sector.
Mott MacDonald has extensive hands-on experience in the railway
industry databases, models and forecasting methodologies,
including:
- The Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook (the invested
knowledge of forecasting parameters, based on extensive market
research);
- CAPRI (the National Railways ticket sales database);
- MOIRA (demand and revenue forecasting modelling);
- PLANET (demand and revenue forecasting model for London and the
South East);
- ORCATS (revenue allocation model between TOCs).
Projects include:
- Value of Rail Studies, SRA - a substantial research study, to
identify factors that drive rail demand from outside the rail
industry and assess the wider benefits of rail. Of particular
importance was the need to identify how rail users, particularly
those that are disadvantaged, value the rail network and the
services provided. The study involved desk-based research to
identify all market intelligence sources, as well as primary
research in the form of questionnaires presented on a range of
regional, commuter and Inter-City routes across the UK.
- Demand Forecasting Expertise - prime consultant on the SRA’s
modelling advice panel. Providing technical expertise in
development, auditing and support of all SRA modelling activities
including ECML, BML and PLANET suite model development.
- InterCity East Coast Rail Franchise Bid - Mott MacDonald
undertook an in-depth analysis of the rail corridor for a
confidential client as part of their rail franchise bid. This
market analysis encompassed the collection of past and future
economic trends, the local travel market (both rail and competing
modes), census data, National Travel Survey data and other market
intelligence to develop a picture of the local rail market both now
and for the duration of the rail franchise. The outputs of this
analysis fed Mott MacDonald's later work developing demand and
revenue forecasts for the clients franchise bid.
In addition, Mott MacDonald has a major role in progressing and
delivering a wide range of strategies and schemes as part of
Merseyside’s Local Transport Plan. These include plan document
preparation, transport and environmental strategy formulation, data
analysis, primary and secondary transport research, modelling
development and advice, and a wide range of ongoing monitoring
programmes.
